My Journey Back to Shizuoka Tea

I was born and raised in Shizuoka, Japan—a place where tea is more than a crop; it is a way of life. As one of Japan's most celebrated tea-growing regions, Shizuoka has been producing exceptional green tea for centuries. Surrounded by rolling tea fields and rich traditions, I grew up with a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship, care, and dedication behind every cup of tea. Tea has always been part of my life.
My mother has been a teacher of the Japanese tea ceremony (Sadō) and traditional flower arrangement (Kadō) for many years. Growing up, I often watched her carefully prepare and serve tea to her guests. Every movement was calm, graceful, and intentional. Through her, I learned that serving tea is more than preparing a drink—it is an expression of respect, hospitality, and caring for others. Those quiet moments continue to inspire the way I share Japanese tea today.
Growing up in Shizuoka also gave me a deep respect for the tea farmers and artisans who dedicate their lives to producing exceptional tea. Behind every harvest are years of experience, patience, and an unwavering commitment to quality—values that have shaped my own appreciation for authentic Japanese tea.
After moving to Canada, I embraced a new culture while building a new life. Living far from my hometown allowed me to see my roots from a different perspective and gave me an even greater appreciation for the traditions I had grown up with.
As the years passed, I found myself wanting to reconnect with the tea culture that had always been part of me. I realized that many people in Canada were discovering Japanese green tea and matcha, but few had the opportunity to experience the authentic teas and stories behind them.
That realization inspired me to establish Hasegawa Trading Co.

Today, I work closely with trusted tea producers in my hometown of Shizuoka to bring authentic Japanese green tea to Canada. Every tea we offer reflects the dedication of the farmers, generations of knowledge passed down through their families, and the unique character of the region where it was grown.
For me, Hasegawa Trading Co. is much more than a tea business.
It is a bridge connecting Shizuoka and Canada.
It is my way of sharing the traditions, craftsmanship, and culture that have shaped my life, while supporting the dedicated tea producers who continue to preserve those traditions for future generations.
My hope is that every cup you enjoy brings more than exceptional flavour. I hope it offers a moment of calm, a sense of connection, and a deeper appreciation for the people and stories behind authentic Japanese tea.
Every cup we share is a small piece of my hometown.
